Robbie Williams: Escapology | July 3, 2003
Robbie end of 2001 that he was all swung out and in need of rest and recuperation. The plan was to take a year out, change the scenery and see how it went. As it turned out Robbie took time out to rock ‘n’ roll! If ‘Escapology’ is the study of freeing oneself from constraints then Robbie has become a musical Houdini.
The album shows just how much Robbie matured both as a songwriter and vocalist. Having said he was thinking of killing himself off he seems to have found himself.
I’ve never enjoyed the process of recording. I’ve always found it very boring. But the Swing album changed all that because it was just amazing. I was working with a 60 piece orchestra a lot of the time singing to them playing in the studio which I never thought I’d be able to do and pulling it off. And it was a joy. And I thought it’s just a shame that recording my own material can’t be this much fun. And then blow me, if this hasn’t been as much fun as the swing album. It’s been amazing.
