Title: Party Monster
Director: Fenton Bailey / Randy Barbato
Specs: USA 2003 35mm 99min
Based on the novel Disco Bloodbath, Party Monster is a mincing, bitchy, and fabulous entrée into the facile, drugged-up, image extravaganza of New York's 1980s phenomena: Club Kids.
When small town boy Michael Alig (Macaulay Culkin) arrives in New York to reinvent himself, the queen of self-aggrandisement James St James assists in transforming him into an overnight celebrity who organises divinely bizarre, increasingly illegal costume parties that flaunt the exhibitionism of the post-disco decade.
A gaggle of undisciplined kids that fall into the lurid candy jar of superficiality, these bi-sexual Club Kids unrepentantly and enthusiastically escape life with glam-camp and excessive drug abuse. Oblivious to reality and dressed in truly fabulous costumes, their posse creates media hype, snorts like there's no tomorrow, and murders their drug dealer with the same detached chic.
