Title: The Harsh Divide

Made for Channel 4, this is a series of four three-minute animated portraits of South African Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) activists living with HIV/AIDS, some of whom have access to treatment, and some who don't. The films use a mixture of 360 degree panoramic portraits, and animated stills, taken by photographer Gideon Mendel, accompanied by audio interviews recorded at the time. This project showcases Mendel's move from more traditional photojournalism to a multi-media platform. The project is a collaboration with multi-media photographer Guilhem Alandry, and animator Tessa Lewin.

In this highly stylised, deliciously witty black and white, not-so silent movie, deranged fag-hag, Pussy, dispenses brutal and final justice on the annoyingly deserving.
All the time confessing her sin to her uninspired shrink, Pussy and friend-slave, Buttfucker, deviously kidnap promiscuously yummy men to play out their decadent and evil sexual fantasies.

Living in Cape Town's Langa Township, Goniwe has miraculously survived the excesses and violence of the gay community's marginalisation.
His ancestors have now called him to become a traditional Xhosa Sangoma. He embraces the calling's demands of isolation and respect with relief, reassured that “the ancestors do not discriminate in the same way that we mortals do.”
