UNCHR to vote on sexual orientation
January 28, 2004
JOHANNESBURG — The United Nations Commission on Human Rights will be voting on the Human Rights and Sexual Orientation" resolution (E/CN.4/2003/L.92) in March this year. The Resolution is aimed at acknowledging discrimination based on sexual orientation and protecting those affected by it.
Many countries have already taken very strong positions following Brazil 's groundbreaking resolution in March 2003. Seeing that South Africa is one of the supporting countries of this resolution, the Lesbian and Gay Equality Project would like to offer our support of a favourable (Yes) vote in regards to this resolution. By doing so, our country will be strengthening our position amongst those who are true to the core values of international human rights legislation: dignity and justice for all human beings , without discrimination whatsoever.
If the resolution is approved, it will send a clear signal to the global community that they are NOT right when they discriminate against people on the grounds of their sexual orientation.
South Africa is a world leader in the field of Human Rights and Sexual Orientation – our hope is that, through a vote in favour of the Brazilian Resolution, our country can help lead the way to a more equitable future for all!
In this light, the Lesbian and Gay Equality Project, as part of the progressive movement for social justice, calls on all progressive South Africans to commit themselves to the process of securing a positive vote for the Brazilian Resolution by our government.
