Gay community did not react 'violently' to arrest threats
September 28, 2004
JOHANNESBURG — In a news item issued on Saturday, Sapa reported gay and lesbian
groups "reacted violently" to earlier reports that Johannesburg
Metro Police would arrest marchers in drag on the grounds that
people in drag were in disguise.
In fact, the gay and lesbian organisations vigorously opposed
the envisaged arrests and engaged the Metro police on the matter.
The authorities eventually relented and men in drag were welcomed
at the gay pride parade held in Johannesburg on Saturday. No threat
of violence was made by the gay activists. – Sapa
