CAPE TOWN — Final year graphic design and photography students from the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography were asked to come up with a visual communication campaign for the 2005 PRIDE FESTIVAL incorporating Cape Town PRIDE'S pay-off line for 2005 'Our freedom to love'.
The Academic Head of Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography says: 'We try, as far as possible, to involve our final year learners in real briefs, so when Mike Thoms from PRIDE's Advertising and Communications sub-committee approached us to get involved in the project, we were very excited. The opportunity to work with a real brief and a real client in the execution of a successful visual communication campaign offers a powerful learning experience while you're still a student, and our final year learners have enjoyed the challenge of developing ideas and attempting to formulate successful visual communications that are shaped by such a diverse and interesting market.'

Mike Thoms says 'It is always a great challenge to come up with a pay-off line that is socially, politically and culturally relevant and that engages our audience from the outset in the PRIDE FESTIVAL. This year there was a lot of lively debate around the pay-off line 'Our freedom to love' but in the end we thought it was a great way to link to last year's pay-off line 'Ten years of freedom, ten days of fun' while allowing for a celebration of social and cultural values around queer identity as well as providing a meaningful link to the most pressing queer political debate currently playing itself out in the courts.'
Learners from the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography were asked to come up with a visual communication campaign that would speak to the depth and range of the queer market place. The advertising sub-committee finally chose the campaign presented by Rene van Huyssteen that comprises a series of sexy photographic images taken by Rene as well as a beautiful design around the pay-off line. Mike Thoms comments that 'the learners came up with some amazing stuff and of course it was difficult to choose the best campaign. We tested three of the campaigns on a relatively large sample before choosing Rene's. Her images are incredibly sexy and beautiful and the overall design elements are very seductive. We hope the queer public will enjoy them!' – Issued by Cape Town Pride Festival
