CAPE TOWN — Cape Town Pride Festival kicks off on Friday 17th with the Red Party at Cruz in GreenPoint. Miss Gay Pride 2006 will be crowned and there are prizes to be won. Wear red, the colour of love, and dance to DJ Mitzi until late. On the same night the Photographic Exhibition opens at the VEO Gallery in Jarvis Street with a variety of works around Pride's theme of Uniting Cultures of Cape Town, and there's a Battle of the girls' DJs from Lush and Hectic at Sliver.

On Saturday Kenilworth Race Course comes alive with the Pink Race Day, where all the stakes are named after Pride sponsors and the pink people will turn out in fabulous style for a day of wining and dining at the course. Tables of ten may be booked and there are still a few available. There's a Race Day afterparty at Cruz starting at 20h00, and for the girls there's a Lush party upstairs at Sliver as usual. For those who want a quieter evening, take in a dinner and cabaret at Capella Restaurant.

On Sunday Pride moves to the townships, with a mini parade through the streets of Guguletu. eLoction day will also include cultural dancing, food and music, and there's plenty of safe parking if you want to join in. In the garden at Sliver there'll be a tea dance in the afternoon, and for the more literary-minded the Pride Book Fair takes place starting at 15h00 at Cape Info Africa in Napier Street. Come together with well-known gay and gay-friendly South African authors who will be on hand to sign their books for you, and listen to a reading of gay poetry contributed by local poets.

Proceeds from Pride 2006 will go to the Pride Shelter Trust, a fund that has been created to establish a shelter for LGBT people in times of crisis.
