JOHANNESBURG — The Gay and Lesbian Archives (Gala) are working on a book about Pride, 15
years into its history and 10 years into SA's new democracy. Pride has been
a key part of developing new constitutional rights for gay and lesbian
people, and has evolved from a protest march demanding rights into a
celebration of the achievement of some of those rights.
Gala, in conjunction with Mail & Guardian journalist Shaun de Waal and other
researchers, want to compile a book that celebrates Pride through pictures,
memories and the personal stories of people involved – whether as
organizers, speakers, performers, or just ordinary people who went along for
fun.
We are asking people to send us their photographs of Pride, especially the
early eras, and to write if they so wish a short piece about their memories
of Pride – any special events, why they were meaningful to you, and so
forth.
We'd like to see as many people as possible involved in getting this
information together; the book will be filled with pictures of everyone at
Pride, doing whatever it was they did, so that the book becomes a souvenir
and a record for all of us who have been attending Pride over the years
Send your photos, memories or questions to books@mg.co.za. Contact Shaun at
that address if you want to organize for material to be posted by snailmail
or collected from you. Material submitted will become part of the Gala
archives, where it will be available for future generations to see how gay
and lesbian lives and rights developed in South Africa.
We'll keep you informed about progress, too! Hopefully by the time the next
Gay and Lesbian film festival rolls around, we'll have a lovely, colourful,
fun-filled book for you!
