Gauteng Prides 2009
eptember 10, 2009
JOHANNESBURG — Its Pride season in Gauteng once again and the Joint Working Group and the 070707 campaign are calling on all Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Allied people to take to the streets for the three events we have coming up in the Province. From the first ever Ekhuruleni pride, through the ever growing Soweto Pride to the always popular Joburg Pride, come out and march with us. Celebrate our power and pride, protest prejudice and speak out against hate. The three events do not take place in isolation from one another, each is a unique opportunity for our diverse community to bring the message of pride to a different audience across the Province and each deserves our solidarity and support.
Ekhuruleni Pride – 19 September 2009 – Kwa Thema
Ekhuruleni has been one of the front lines in our fight against homophobic Hate Crime in South Africa. The brutal murders of Eudy Simelane and Girly Nkosi have gained national attention. They represent however only a fraction of the physical and sexual violence, the prejudice and the hate that LGBTI people in Ekhuruleni face on a daily basis. Activists in the area have decided to stand up and show their pride with a march in memory of Simelane and Nkosi through the streets of Kwa Thema. Show your solidarity by joining them.
The march will leave from the Kwa-Thema Community Hall at 09:00

Soweto Pride – 24 to 27 September 2009 – Meadowlands
In the space of just a few years Soweto Pride has grown from a small group of activists marching to the four day programme of activities taking place this year. These include a day of activities at Constitution Hill on the 24th and an Out In Africa movie showing on the 25th. This year's march will take place on the 26th in Meadowlands, the site of the murders of Sizakele Sigasa and Salome Masooa two years ago. Let's support the growing momentum of this amazing event and engage with all the activities being organized.
The parade will leave from the Cnr Vincent and Saunders in Meadowlands at 10am. For those coming from Joburg a convoy will be leaving from the SABC Radio Park in Auckland Park at 9am

Joburg Pride – 3 October 2009 – Zoo Lake
The 20th Johannesburg Pride event will take place on the 3rd October at Zoo Lake in Rosebank. The parade whose history is inextricable linked to the history of LGBTI activism in South Africa will this year be honouring that history by drawing attention to the struggle for the rights of LGBTI people in South Africa and the people who fought and continue to fight that struggle. Members of the JWG and the 070707 will be out in force on the march and will have stalls and activities in the NGO village at Zoo Lake for the full day. The parade leaves Zoo Lake at 11am and activities will continue till around 6pm.
