Dirk Shafer recreates his surreal term of office as 1992 Playgirl Man of the Year in a somewhat self-conscious (but can he help it?) documentary.
Using clips of footage as it might have been, Shafer blurs the boundaries between fantasy and reality and tells us how it feels to be America's hetero hunk heart-throb, managing to be humorous and horrifying at the same time. The film deals less with the politics of visibility than it does with Dirk's own story – and is, accidentally perhaps, a terrifying and hilarious indictment of American culture and values. Man of the Year was a huge OIA Festival favourite in 1996.
