This eloquent, intelligent and gently amusing film is infused with the sparkling nuances of character, political agendas, and a deliciously decayed back-drop that make this a quintessentially Cuban film.
Meeting under less than truthful circumstances (Diego has bet that he can bed David; David is gathering evidence proving Diego's counterrevolutionary involvement), flamboyantly arty Diego intellectually seduces the earnest idealistic student of communism, David, by introducing his officially educated and constrained mind to the limitless possibilities of art and literature. David's ex-girlfriend and Nancy, a deeply religious whore, make an appearance but the central focus is on the thoughtful and insightful depiction of the men’s developing friendship, where mentor and pupil need more from each other than a discussion on ideologies.
