JOHANNESBURG — She has easily one of the most recognizable faces in South Africa. Her dark complexion perfectly framed by her long black hair. But it's the eyes that really draw you in and that unbelievable smile that finally captures you.
Cape Town born Hlubi Mboyo is taking South Africa by storm. Since she first appeared as Nandipa in Isidingo, SA has taken notice of this starlet that literally has stolen the show from the seasoned, and might I say rather boring, actors of the soapie set on the fictitious Horizon Deep.
Bubbling with excitement to speak to a member of the press, Hlubi is no stranger to the prying questions of journalists wanting to know all about her. She is careful to answer questions though, ever so slightly hesitating before she replies with a clever retort.
This year's Pride festival truly has now got one of the most beautiful MC's ever to host the event. On Saturday, 25 September Hlubi will be the one taking control of the stage and introducing all those who will at least try end draw the crowds attention away from her.
"The Pride event, though initially centered around achieving equality is a celebration of the rights won and the life that these rights now allow. People are now able to be proud of who they are. This is something we should all do. We should all be proud of who we are regardless of those things that make different from each other," she says.
It takes a great deal of control to interview Hlubi and not get carried away. Red Bull would do well to ask her to represent their brand. She is a vivacious and energetic character that exudes so much confidence and sex appeal. Time and time again, when asked what is important to her, she would reply, "Passion".
"To be passionate about what you believe in and what you do is what drives me. It gives me energy to attack those things that may hamper me from achieving what I want out of life. Without passion you might as well be dead."
For those of you who watch Isidingo, Hlubi's character Nandipa is perhaps the most real. Her character is an HIV positive young woman who dreams for a brighter future with her husband and hopefully a child of her own. "HIV is everybody's problem," she says. The writers of the show certainly have touch home with this topic, and Hlubi delivers a fantastic performance that, I don't mind saying, draws me in every time I watch and every now and then forces a tear from my eye.
And what about love? Well there is someone in her life, although she is not disclosing his name. Sorry girls, she's straight – but hey, we love her anyway!
Hlubi – A wild child for the platinum millennium, a 60's child with a sense of accountability.
