JOHANNESBURG — A face like an angel and a smile like a schoolgirl that just broken into the showers of a boy's gym after a rugby match – that best describes Abi Plaatjies. 'What a breath of fresh air', was my first thought when sitting down to meet this beauty.
Having shot to fame, or should I rather say notoriety, after she got intimately involved with one of her housemates in Big Brother Africa, Abi has gone from strength to strength taking the public scornful remarks and heartfelt praises in her stride.
"I got a lot of slack from the public after I got involved with a black man in the Big Brother Africa house," she says. "People were not prepared to see me kiss someone darker than myself." Her flippant attitude to those who scorn her choice in men must be applauded.
After having been voted out of the Big Brother house, Abi has certainly not let the spotlight fade. Rather she has sought to further her film career – and in Nigeria of all places! And why not? Nigeria's film industry is booming into one of the biggest in Africa. Some could even call it the center of Afriwood, with Abi the rising equivalent to Kareena Kapoor.
Abi will be a MC at this year's Pride festivities, offering her considerable talent, smiles, laughs and good looks to may sure that all goes smoothly.
"Pride is a quality that we should all have in ourselves," Abi says with a smile. "The Pride festival is a celebration of everything we are – gay, straight, black or white".
Now girls, just before you start thinking about throwing your number at her, Abi is straight, but she is accepting of compliments from all.
One last word she has to say, "Be who you are. With the world looking on, it is okay to just be you, and enjoy it."
She may be off our TV screens now, and making films in Nigeria, but watch out for this young woman. With a spirit of a wild horse, Abi is sure to be back with a wicked smile and a sexy pout. – Own correspondent
