Friday

The Cape Town Pride Festival is now in full swing after an action packed first weekend. The Candy Glam Ball, which incorporated the Pride Community Awards, was held last Friday night. Miss Lola Fine and Jeanine Cameron hosted the festivities, which included some seriously smouldering torch songs performed by Margaret, and some soulful ballads and foot stompers from the Soul Boys. Justice Edwin Cameron gave an inspiring speech about how we must celebrate and enjoy our rights, but that we need to keep on protecting them.

Saturday

The Pride Parade kicked off a little after noon. Mr Gay Pride 2007, riding a Renault convertible and waving the Rainbow Flag, led the parade which incorporated the usual array of floats, divas, leather queens, gay organisations, muscle Marys, parents of gays, friends of gays, gays, dykes, drag queens and everybody else in between.

The float which received the most attention was the Chapel of Love, celebrating our right to marry.

The Carnival of Love procession returned to de Waterkant at 2pm where around 3 000 revellers rolled into the Street Party.

Top Twenty diva, Salome, kicked off the entertainment. The Five Diamonds from Kimberly wowed the crowd with their Big Hair. Trucker gave us a sample of his electro-synth sound. Sheena with the Soul Desire Dance Company, Lola Fine and Maxine Magic entertained us with an all too short teaser from their forthcoming Pride Divas show. Coda, with their fusion of classical, kwaito and dance music got everybody throwing their hands up in the air. Goldfish, the final act of the day, brought the party goers into a frenzy. The party continued later at Cruz for the annual Red Party which was awash with red, the colour of love.

Sunday

The Carnival of Love moved to Guguletu on Sunday with the Pride e’Loction Day of Love, which included a parade through the township, followed by a party at the sports stadium. The Pride “Queer Talk” Seminar series began on Sunday morning at Victoria Junction, and was followed by the Pride Book Affair. Edwin Cameron spoke at both events.
